Around the time I was sending out demos of Mod Housewife, trying to get a record deal, I was also working as a temp at Sony Music. Good for getting free cassettes (this was after all the early to mid 90's) and even CDs if you were lucky but bad for self esteem. In the Sony building on Madison Avenue I would often encounter people I'd see out in my other life as a musician. I was so convinced I was a loser for also having to work a day job that I scurried in and out of the building, trying to call as little attention to myself as possible.
One day I got a call from reception to come down to the lobby, there was a delivery for me. "Oh my God, this is it, the moment I've been waiting for," I was thinking as I got on the elevator. Surely it was a hand delivered letter from a person in a position of power somewhere, informing me that my temping days were over. When I got to reception, there was a huge bouquet of the most beautiful flowers with my name on it, confirmation that my life was about to change. I tore open the card - "Congratulations Amy! You're the best." signed Rosemary Scott Temporary Agency.
Wow! How did my employer already know that I had a record deal? I carried the flowers into the elevator and back upstairs, head held high, acknowleding all the admiring looks. When I got to my desk there was a voice message from the temp agency, the office manager saying "Way to go Amy! We're so proud of you." I wondered how they'd intercepted the good news from one of the many labels I'd sent my recording to. Then I noticed a large envelope with my name on it. I tore it open. It was a laminated certificate proclaiming Amy Rigby - Temp Of The Month. For exemplary service, we thank you. Signed Rosemary Scott Temporary Agency.
