The Things You Leave Behind (Lenny Kaye)

Sooner or later we’re all gonna find
That we’ve made it to the end of the line
It gets heavier every mountain we climb
It’s the things you leave behind

It’s been one of those years
When people keeping passing
Into the past but you’re still here
Gotta pick up the pieces of your life and theirs
Who gets what and why
We all cart around
A whole lot of baggage
That would better be left by the side of the road
Books and records, old clothes and photos
Carry a heavy load

But sooner or later we’re all gonna find
That we’ve made it to the end of the line
It gets heavier every mountain we climb
It’s the things you leave behind

Unfinished business
Often bears witness
To the best of intentions
For cleaning it up
Gonna get to it one day or another
Until it gets too much
Now I like to forage
In some people’s storage
As much as the next guy
But you gotta expect
That what you find and pass along
Will keep on keeping on and on

And sooner or later we’re all gonna find
That we’ve made it to the end of the line
It gets heavier every mountain we climb
It’s the things you leave behind

Now my friend Jim
He packed it all in
To a 12 by 4 storage space
Boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes
All neatly piled and tucked in place
Now I got an attic
And you’ve got a basement
But it together and what do we see
A piece of you and a piece of me
Moving on to antiquity

So sooner or later we’re all gonna find
That we made it to the end of the line
It’s all there to remind and rewind
It’s the things you leave behind
It’s the stuff you leave behind
It’s the friends you leave behind
And it’s the songs you leave behind
It’s the things you leave behind
